Top musicians from three Santa Maria Valley Public High Schools will make music together in a special concert on Sunday, Feb. 11th.

The idea came from the Superintendent’s Student Council.

The newly created SMJUHSD Honor Band includes 58 music students from Righetti, Santa Maria and Pioneer Valley High Schools. The performance starts at 2 p.m. inside the new PVHS Performing Arts Center. People should arrive early to the free event because seating is limited.

The guest conductor for the program is William V. Johnson, Professor of Music Emeritus at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. The selection of eight pieces include “The Banner Yet Waves” by David Gorham, “Flourish for a Wind band” by Ralph Vaughan Williams and “Encanto” by Robert W. Smith.

"I am so excited and honored to have been chosen to be part of the very first District Honor Band,’’ said PVHS Flute player and junior Carlos Morales. I think it will be really fun to play together with the kids from Righetti and Santa Maria because we have done things together for fun, but have not had the chance to play together very often. This is going to let us kind of become one big musical family for the weekend and hopefully make some new friends. My director, Mrs. Cindy Wehlander, went to Cal Poly and has known the guest conductor for a long time. She has told us that having the opportunity to work with Mr. Johnson will be very special and one that we will never forget! I can hardly wait to see what I learn from him."

Band Directors Charlie Kim (ERHS), Wehlander (PVHS) and Samantha Quart (SMHS) selected the students. The musicians received the music a few weeks ago and have been practicing before the all-day rehearsal Saturday and then a dress rehearsal Sunday morning.

The Superintendent’s Student Council is a monthly meeting where student representatives and their principals from all the sites gather with Dr. Mark Richardson to express their desires, voice any concerns and learn how the district operates and why.
