The emotions will be running high for Pioneer Valley High School senior Caitlyn Brown as she ends one chapter of her life.

“I’m pretty excited just to know that I finally have accomplished this,” Brown said about her impending graduation set for Thursday, June 7. “I’m pretty proud to be a Panther.”

Brown, who was a leader for the Pioneer Valley Panthers girls tennis team all four years at the school, says she will continue her playing career when she attends California State University, Bakersfield in the fall. She has at least a partial scholarship there.

“My mom put me in tennis, I liked it more and more. When I was 13, I was pushed by a coach and set my goals for my career in tennis,” Brown said.

Tennis is a big part of Brown’s life, while attending CSUB, she will study Kinesiology in hopes to one day becoming a tennis coach.

“Currently I am working as an assistant coach at the Santa Maria Country Club, so hopefully that helps me later on,” she said.

One memorable moment during her tennis career was some of the competitive matches that she took part in against Arroyo Grande’s Sophie Whittle and Lauren Hayashi.

“We had a few matches where it was pretty good and pretty intense — I like the felling.”

Brown said she’s not sure she’s ready for the emotion of graduation.

“Probably tears of joy, of finally accomplishing high school,” Brown said. “I’m pretty sure there will be mixed emotions everywhere. Happiness, sadness.”

One thing Brown says she’ll need time to get used to after high school is leaving her friends behind.

“Most of my friends I hang out with are staying here, so I will have to come visit,” Brown said. “I am definitely going to miss them a lot.”

As far as life off the courts, Brown has been a leader to her fellow students.

“What you look for from your student athletes is if they are a student first, she is committed to being a good student, committed to being involved in ASB and leadership roles,” Pioneer Valley athletics director Greg Dickinson said. “She leads by example, with her work ethic, and how she carried herself.”

Dickinson gives high praise to Brown in the way that she puts her teammates and school ahead of herself.

“You are always proud of those kids that you would be happy to call your own, I would be proud to have a daughter like Caitlyn,” Dickinson said.

“Her ability to get along with others and her ability to put the team and school higher than herself.”
