Spring sports begin in earnest this week and the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table luncheon featured coaches and players from the upcoming season, but a couple winter sports athletes were celebrated as the Athletes of the Week.
Pioneer Valley girls wrestler Courteney Tompkins finished up another phenomenal year, which culminated with a state championship over the weekend in Visalia.
Tompkins won the final match 3-2 over the No. 1 seeded wrestler, Alexandria Glaude, from Christian Brothers High in Sacramento after defeating the No. 2 seed Celycia Sandoval from Franklin High, another Sacramento school.
With the win, Tompkins earned the title of state champion in the 170-pound division.
For her accomplishment, Tompkins was named the female Athlete of the Week at the luncheon, held Monday at Giavanni’s Pizza in Orcutt.
